| Thank you for your interest in our various consulting projects. Through the years Instruction & Design Concepts has developed many professionally unique relationships with various people, organizations and companies in order to collaboratively "make things happen." Below you'll find a sampling of some of our work. A great deal of the graphic design and layout work was done by Judy Kick.
Some of the examples shared are RealPlayer, QuickTime or Adobe Acrobat® PDF files.
The Ohio State University Leadership Center

In addition to being a member of the Ohio State University Leadership Center Advisory Committee, Fran consulted with the center in 2003 to assist implementing cost recovery strategies, strategically grow program offerings, and explore potential product ideas. Wilmington College
Fran taught as a consulting adjunct faculty member at Wilmington College (Ohio) and served as the consulting director for the Wilmington Leadership Institute from 1995-1998. During this time, Wilmington College was recognized by the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs and the Higher Education Research Institute as one of the top 16 programs in the U.S. The program was also selected for inclusion in the 7th Edition of the Center for Creative Leadership Education Source Book.

"The student leadership program at Wilmington College, initiated in 1981, was in need of a major overhaul and 'reengineering.' Because of our relationship with Fran and his knowledge and experience with hundreds of college and university leadership programs, we looked to Fran for ideas and direction. Having directed the College's leadership program for over 15 years, I have encountered many 'leadership' folks. Fran Kick does it all and does it well. As a consultant his ideas, contacts, resources and positive energy get things moving, stuff happening, and people having fun with purpose and direction."

Miami University/Harry T. Wilks Leadership Institute

Mary Shannon joined the Harry T. Wilks Leadership Institute at Miami University as Interim Coordinator in 2004. From late 2004 through early 2005, we consulted and helped develop the high school leadership conference "Finding the Leader in You" presented on April 14, 2005. In addition to serving as a consulting member of the faculty planning team, we were able to work closely with the student planning team. A pre-conference training was also designed and delivered to all the Leadership Assessment and Workshop Facilitators (who were all Miami University students). Eight different area high schools had students participate in the day-long program. Every college student, high school student and teacher involved in the day received a copy of our book KICK IT IN and TAKE THE LEAD!
"KICK IT IN was a very fun-filled hour that taught me to look closer at my leadership style and to evaluate others' styles. Fran was so energetic and captured my attention through every minute. He kept us laughing, moving, and especially thinking during the entire hour."
Melanie Nelson, Miami University Student, Buck Rodgers Leadership Program
"Today I attended a leadership workshop entitled 'KICK IT IN!' It was very interesting and I absolutely felt empowered when I left. I was extremely impressed by Fran's enthusiasm."
Matt Schindler, Miami University Student, Buck Rodgers Leadership Program
Good Life Award

The Washington-Centerville Public Library approached Fran to speak at their annual Good Life Award Ceremony and consult in the creation of a full-page newspaper kidsINK activity page. We also created a series of classroom activities for teachers to use in conjunction with this writing contest. The contest and awards are made possible by an endowment from the family of Dorothy Yeck, who believeed that you're never too young to have a positive impact on the world.

TEENTALK/Fox 45-TV

Created as an after-school special half-hour television show, Fran worked as host and served as one of the co-producers. The project involved extensive on-the-street, in-the-schools and at-the-mall taping as well as in-studio small group discussions. In addition to the show, six discussion starter videos were developed as seven-minute openers for KICKing off small group dialogue on subjects such as: parents, teachers, family, friends, TV and the media.

Cincinnati Public Schools 8th-Grade Career Fair

January 10, 2008 CPS hosted an event for every eighth-grade student who attended any of the thirty K-8 schools in the district. This program served as a culminating experience for the 2008-09 Ninth-Grade Application Period, during which time each student selects which high school in the district they wish to attend. The goal was to help eighth-graders take what they learned about careers and connect them to one of the Career-Technical Pathways offered in the district's seventeen high schools. Working closely with the CPS Education Center, we created a customized assembly-type program which was repeated six times throughout the day. Following the event, we created a video summary which highlighted the day's activities and shared snippets from the presentation.

Tech Prep Leadership Program

The Greater Cincinnati Tech Prep Consortium had sponsored events where we KICKed IT IN with both students and teachers for years. However, in 2005 they were interested in creating both a Leadership and College Convocation Program for students in high schools across the Greater Cincinnati region. After consulting with Terry Benedict, Assistant Director for the Greater Cincinnati Tech Prep Consortium, ideas were prepared and presented to the organizing committee as well as Tim Nolan, Director of the Consortium. The Tech Prep Leadership Program and Convocation was launched in 2005.
What began for 500 students in 2005, grew to almost 700 in 2007. Many of the initial ideas shared continue to develop. The first Tech Prep Student Leadership Conference for selected Junior/rising Senior students in the program was launched in May of 2007. The program was highlighted at the National Career Pathways Network Conference in October of 2007. The National Career Pathways Network is the leading professional development experience for practitioners in Tech Prep, Career Pathways, Career Clusters, Programs of Study, and CTE.

City of Kettering Youth Town Hall Meeting

In 2004, the City of Kettering Parks & Recreation Administration in cooperation with the Kettering Youth Council retained Fran to facilitate a Town Hall Meeting. The goal was to get participants from all sectors and organizations together sharing ideas on what steps the city could take individually, organizationally and across the city so that kids would have the best chance to succeed. In addition to designing the meeting format and activities, Fran prepared a Post-Town Hall Report to document the process and ideas collected.

KICK IT IN & HIT THE ROPES!
Originally created in 1994, this one-day, 12-hour, non-stop experiential leadership adventure was developed with Frank Crockett, a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and member of the Association for Experiential Education (AEE). By combining Fran's high-energy presentations with Frank's high-level ropes course experiences, this program integrated leadership and teambuilding theory into interactive hands-on practice for high school student leaders.

Procter & Gamble Co.

This six month consulting assignment with the hotel/restaurant division for the commercial service products group included monthly programs covering topics such as: increasing self-awareness, locus of control, motivation, self-acceptance, self-image, self-esteem, developing community, team building, communication barriers & builders, and dealing with change. After an initial meeting with the operations manager, all materials, sessions and curriculum was developed and implemented both in large group half/full day retreats as well as one-on-one counseling sessions.
Hoosier Hospitality Conference

The Indiana Tourism Division, the Association of Indiana Convention and Visitor's Bureaus, the Indiana Hotel and Motel Association, the Council of Indiana Attractions, the Indiana Restaurant Association, the Indiana State Festivals Association, the Indiana Bed & Breakfast Association, the Recreational Vehicle Council of Indiana, all came together at the 2000 Hoosier Hospitality Conference. After one of the planning committee members saw us KICKin' IT IN at a college orientation, he requested we custom create two presentations:
KICKin' IT IN! Reaching today's multi-generational fast-paced been-there-done-that kind of world! What motivates people to get more engaged, be more responsive and generate enthusiasm? This session stives to inspire participants to consider how organizations currently "reach people" and what really "gets to" our generationally diverse world.
Getting ALL of your employees to KICK IT IN! Tired of the "carrot & stick" approach? Want people to do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, whether they want to do it or not, without being asked? This session explores how we can tap into and develop the self-motivation within individuals to make things happen by increasing commitment and responsibility across generational lines.

Action Team Volunteers

Volunteers of America, the Major League Baseball Players Trust, and the Cincinnati Reds created an Action Team to encourage high school students to get involved in their communities and help those in need. Action Teams, composed of Major League baseball players and area high school students who are selected as Team Captains, work together to deliver an important message to students volunteering is cool, fun and personally rewarding. To date, nationwide more than 14,000 high school volunteers have helped over 60,000 people in their communities. Fran was asked to deliver the Team Captain Orientation in 2008, Presenting Yourself as a Leader.

Portfolio Book/Wright State University

The culmination of this project resulted in the book Portfolios Across the Curriculum and Beyond co-authored with Donna Cole, Chuck Ryan and Bonnie Mathies. The book combines the rational & assessment research as well as the guidelines & pragmatic approaches within a concise format that you can actually use! Everyone seems to be talking about improving the assessment process using portfolios in the classroom. But too many attempts at using portfolios end up being overstuffed scrapbooks with a letter grade slapped on the cover. This book is designed for educators to really make authentic assessment and improvement happen via portfolios. The material evolved from Wright State University's program of portfolio use in their teacher education program. The background is real and covers subject areas across the curriculum. There's even a chapter on developing the professional educator's portfolio. Bringing theory to practice, the book also includes a chapter on using technology and portfolios in the future.
KICK IT IN & TAKE THE LEAD

KICK IT IN: Developing the Self-Motivation to TAKE THE LEAD! is the first book in our KICK IT IN & TAKE THE LEAD series of student-centered books with teacher/facilitator support. The book evolved from a set of summer camp support materials we developed. The resulting interactive guidebook explores student leadership from a unique perspective with many projects and activities. The facilitator guide is PDF-based and has tons of supplemental materials, references and resources both on disc and online.
If you have a project you're currently involved in or planning and would like to discuss the possibilities of "making something happen" that will really KICK IT IN, please feel free to contact Fran directly at
. Just let him know what your thoughts are and what your ideas might be. Because of the individualized and customized nature of every project, all work is done on a per-project basis financially and logistically.
